Guy Fawkes: Hero or Criminal?

Posted: November 5, 2013 in Uncategorized

The line between a hero and a criminal is often a very blurry one, with multiple opinions on either side validating the reasons to believe one thing vs. the other. Perhaps one of the most famous lines in movie history comes from the movie The Dark Knight, when Commissioner Gordon tells his son:

He’s not a hero…

when answering the question as to why Batman must run from the police. And this is true of any Super Hero. If you are brave enough, and willing enough to take justice into your own hands, you’ve got to be prepared to either run and hide, or stand and fight.

One extremely famous example of this classic vigilante persona is the infamous Guy Fawkes, who is celebrated throughout England today.

Made extremely famous by the movie V for Vendetta, Guy Fawkes is a legendary figure among British citizens for his involvement in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. While ultimately a failed attempt at an assassination, this plot has remained in Britain’s culture as one example of how even failed heroics can have a lasting impact on society.
